RESEARCH INTERESTS 

My research activity concerns the field of  Digital Image Processing and it focuses the following main areas:

• Digital image compression.

• Texture classification using fuzzy sets. 

• Medical image segmentation.

• Fuzzy approaches to image processing. 

My first area of interest is currently the study of the new compression standard Jpeg2000 and this is my primary task at STMicroelectronics. I'm also  interested in developing new fuzzy algorithms to address some common problems in Image Processing (texture classification, edge finding, image segmentation). I started these activities during my accademic studies and I continued them in collaboration with Professor Giovanni Gallo of the University of  Catania.

  Thesis: Connessione Fuzzy e Tecniche di Watershed per la Segmentazione di Immagini Digitali (Fuzzy Connectedness and Watershed Techniques for Digital Image Segmentation), advisor Prof. G.Gallo.
  
  Thesis Abstract: This thesis presents an innovative technique for digital image segmentation based on a fuzzy algorithm introduced by J.Udupa et alii in 1995. The new proposed approach reduces drammatically the size of the graph that the Udupa's algorithm need to process using the so-called ``watershed decomposition" technique. This, in turn, leads to a large speed-up with negligible quality loss and allows the use of the new method in real time processing of medical image even on a small machine.

• March 2001: I obtained the 5^th position in the competition for two research fellowships announced by C.N.R. (Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, National Research Council) on 24^th May 2000 (announcement n°. 201.02.60, code n.° 21.01.05), with marks 49,1/70.
  
  

• 1^st December 1999 – 30^th November 2000:  I have been awarded a research fellowship announced by C.N.R. (Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, National Research Council, announcement n°. 201.15.12, 11^th June 1998, code n.° 21.15.01)  and I used it at Mathematics and Computer Science Department of the University of Catania, developing new image processing algorithms based on fuzzy logic.
